We walked from the Blue Mosque past Aya Sofia to the Topkapi Palace. The Palace dates to the mid-1400's and served as the imperial palace of the Ottomans until the Dolmabache Palace was constructed nearly 400 years later.
The Topkapi palace is on the Seraglio Point where the Bosphorous Straits empties from the Black Sea in the Sea of Marmara. The walled palace contains numerous courtyards, individual buildings, a treasury, armory, harem (hey, why not?), and religious relics that included Moses' staff and the arm of John the Baptist.
We entered the Palace through the Imperial Gate by first passing two machine gun-toting soldiers, pausing in this core to marvel at the craftsmanship of brickwork. Only then did we explore most of the estate.
